How Long Does It Take To Make Money Writing?

People who want to make money from their writing skills, blogging skills or just want to make money online, are always asking how long it is going to take. It's certainly a good question to ask. The problem is that people have false expectations of how much money they can make and how quickly they can make it.

There are adverts plastered all over the internet about how you can make $4,567 in an hour whilst sitting on the beach with your laptop. Perhaps some lucky person really has found a way of doing this. However one thing is for sure, if you are starting out with nothing, you will never be able to do this.

If people really can make this kind of money, why would they tell anyone about it? Why wouldn't they just sit there cashing in and not bother creating any competition for themselves. This tells you that it's likely to be a scam.

So if you think you can make anywhere near this kind of money with little effort you might as well give up now because it just doesn't happen like that. There are people who have been trying to make money on the internet for years and still haven't managed to make enough to give up their day job.

What you will need to do is decide what the best course of action is for you. Do you want to Make Money Writing For Others or do you want to Make Money Writing For Yourself? This will have a major impact on how quickly it will take to make money.

If you want to write for others then it doesn't have to take long before you start to make money. Start off by creating a portfolio of about a dozen articles that reflect your writing style. You might decide to focus on a few niches that you are familiar with or you might decide to write about lots of different things.

When you have created a portfolio you can then show it to potential clients. Most people who want to make money writing will do so by writing "how to" articles on child care, health, finances etc. The price you will charge will normally be at least $5 for 500.

Writing 500 words can be done within half an hour so if you write two articles an hour you are making $10/hr. This may or may not be a very good income for you.

If you are a particularly good writer and have good qualifications then you can charge a lot more per article however finding the sort of clients who will pay for this isn't easy. There are people who can charge $25 per 500 words.

If you are new to writing for others then you don't want to price yourself too high because you want to build up a reputation. Nor do you want to sell yourself too cheap.

The best place to begin is probably somewhere like odesk.com, elance.com and rentacoder.com. They have lots of clients who are looking for writers so it's easy to find work there. It can take a while to build up feedback so in the beginning you might want to do work cheaply just for the purposes of building up your reputation.

Once you have a lot of people saying good things about you, it will be much easier to start charging more money. You might even want to tell potential clients that you are looking to build up your feedback rating and therefore are prepared to do the work cheaply.

So if you are looking to bring in some money quickly then writing for others is certainly the best way to go. However there is a lot of cheap competition so you might find it difficult to make the kind of money you want.
